John's picture really looks like it's Fall, but it still felt like Summer at the Cape last week. We were lucky enough to have three beautiful sunny days in Harwich Port.
When we arrived on the Cape, I took Aunt Debb directly to "Kevin's" in Yarmouthport for lunch....the best clam chowder on the Cape. It is kinda like the Cape's own version of Cheers. Everyone talks to everyone.
After lunch we headed to Harwich to check in. We stayed at Allen Harbor Breeze Inn & Gardens just across the road from the many boats docked at Allen Harbor.
Funny thing....in the off season the property is known as "Evensong by the Sea", and run as a retreat. Years ago I did some research and found Evensong and fell in love with it, but I didn't know I'd booked us in there until after we arrived. Serendipity, wouldn't you say?
Over the course of our little break from reality, we ate all the seafood in sight (I tried to OD on scallops!) and spent as much time in the sun walking the beach or finding a secluded spot to read. We hit a few of the favorite gift shops and even stopped at the Lavendar Farm.
One of my special moments was in visiting The Seadar Inn where I'd spent so much time in years past. It was a treat to be given a tour by the current manager and see some of my watercolors still in some of the rooms.
Memories of Billy Collins and his family are happy ones and I came away feeling peaceful. (For those of you who don't know, Billy ran the Inn for his Mom and Dad. He was 52 when he passed away 4 years ago.) Billy was the keeper of the Cape for us…always there with a welcoming hug when we arrived and a “what are you crying about?” when it was time to leave.
There was no crying when I left the Cape this time. I will return soon and often; I have found a new sanctuary at Evensong by the Sea.
Yesterday was Ellie's 3 and 1/2 birthday.
Ellie called me last night to tell me she was having her "3 and 1/2 birthday" cake. She said, "Grammy, want some of my cake?" And when I replied, "Sure", she said, "Are ya comin over?" If only......
Sunday, September 27th
Just came home from an overnight in Altamont with Kathy and Larry. Kathy and I went to the annual alumni BKW banquet even though neither one of our classes was being 'honored'. It's still fun to go see all the "old folks", even if some of them really are not older than us. Each year you become reaquainted with someone we went to high school with. I will admit, it's quite fun. The food was good, the company at the table was fun, but the music was way too loud. You're asking now, I can hear it, "And who's getting old complaining about the music?" I know, I know, but that is my only complaint. Guess I'll do it again next year and see who shows up.
